DraftKings NFL Showdown Strategy: The Chalk Is the Cash Line, So What Do Top-10 Lineups Do Differently?
Our DK Showdown standings data: the chalk lineup set the double-up cash line, while top-10 tournament lineups made small, specific pivots off it.
Most Showdown advice tells you to fade the chalk. Our standings data says that's the wrong move in cash games, and only half right in tournaments.
We pulled the full DraftKings standings for every Showdown contest we could export this season. Start with Sunday night's Rams at Broncos double-ups. In the biggest room, 555 of 1,149 entries played the exact same lineup: the top projected build at the major projection sites. The cash line landed exactly on its score. In 10 of the 12 SNF double-ups we entered, the cash line was that lineup's 115.39. Meanwhile, the 778 entries that swapped in a different kicker (and changed nothing else) didn't cash in a single room.
In a double-up, the chalk isn't something to fade. It's the bar you have to clear.
Tournaments are where it gets interesting. The same chalk lineup that reliably cashes almost never wins. So we looked at every lineup that finished in the top 10 across 31 large GPPs and asked what they did differently. Some of the answers surprised us:
- Winning lineups aren't contrarian. They stay much closer to the chalk than you'd expect. Lineups that wandered far from it produced zero top-10 finishes.
- The captain decides a lot. Top-10 lineups made one change far more often than any other, and one position almost never captained a top-10 lineup.
- There's a simple pre-lock filter. A small slice of the field accounted for a big share of top-10 finishes.
A fair warning: this is 8 games of data, so treat it as a starting point, not a law.
